MOSTERT WINS MAIDEN TCR TITLE

By Dan McCarthy

By finishing in position in the opening TCR Australia race at Bathurst, former ‘Great Race’ winner Chaz Mostert has won the 2021 TCR Australia Series.

Mostert stayed out of trouble throughout the race, volunteering to give away seventh position and drop two places to make sure he secured his first TCR Australia crown with the Melbourne Performance Centre team.

Although only a ninth place finish his two closest title rivals also had difficult races themselves, his teammate Luke King suffered brake failure in qualified in ninth but recovered to finish the race in seventh.

Another of Mostert’s title threats failed to make the start, Josh Buchan’s driveshaft broke on the warm-up lap.

This meant that even if Aaron Cameron (who sat fourth coming into the final race) won, ninth for Mostert would secure him the title.

It was essential that Mostert secured the race victory today, AUTO ACTION understands that Walkinshaw Andretti United were not going to allow Mostert to race in the Audi once the Supercars Championship Bathurst 1000 race weekend began tomorrow.

As a result, Mostert was conservative and stayed out of trouble to secure the title, coming just over 24 hours after he crashed in the opening session of the weekend.

Up front Cameron took the win, he held off his Garry Rogers Motorsport Peugeot teammate Ben Bargwanna by just 0.094s at the line, the closest finish in TCR Australia history.
