EXPANDED FIELD FOR SUPER3 RETURN

By Heath McAlpine

Returning after a three-month gap since the opening round at Bathurst, Super3 heads to Winton with its strongest field since the 2019 finale at Sandown.

Current series leader Jon McCorkindale is the latest graduate into Super2 so as a consequence is not part of the field leaving winner last time out Michael Anderson to hold rising stars Reef McCarthy and Nash Harris.

McCarthy arrives at Winton after his father auctioned his Ford Falcon XW GT to fund his racing program, but heads to familiar territory at Winton after recently winning the state Formula Vee round at Phillip Island.

For Morris, he arrives at the rural Victorian circuit after competing in the Trans Am Series where he has impressed and tested recently

This round marks the local event for Brad Jones Racing, which makes a return to the Super3 grid by fielding karter Elly Morrow. It follows an evaluation day held between Morrow’s karting team Tom Williamson Motorsport and BJR last year where she impressed.

Another returnee to the series is Chris Smerdon, who will line up for his 49th round start having been a competitor since the inaugural V8 Touring Car Series race in 2008.

Second-generation racer James Masterton will race at Winton after making his Super3 debut at Bathurst last year in an ex-Paul Morris Motorsport Holden VE Commodore.

Newcomer David Murphy enters a Ford FG Falcon, swelling the blue oval ranks to 10.

Ray Hislop, Jim Pollicina, Jason Gomersall, Garry Hills and Brendan Strong add a strong interstate flavour, while Victorians Steve Page and Garry Collins make their first start in the series this year.

Category manager Liam Curkpatrick is pleased by the size and strength of the field for Round 2.

“Eighteen cars is a great result and when combined with the Dunlop Super2 grid it’s going to be a packed race track at Winton,” Curkpatrick said.

“The mix of young drivers looking to step up through the ranks and those doing it as much for the enjoyment and the competition shows why the category continues to be so popular.

“Nine of the top 10 drivers in the Super2 series standings have raced in Super3 which shows how valuable a stepping stone it is.

“We’ll also welcome back some familiar faces at Winton with arguably the most competitive Super3 Cup grid the series has ever seen, including some drivers new to the series.

“We had an exciting start to the Super3 Series at Bathurst in February and with 18-cars on the grid next week that will surely continue on to Winton.”

Action begins on May 28 with two 40-minute practice sessions.
