Following on from its launch late last year, the first of Porsche’s new 992 GT3 Cup Car has arrived in Australia where it will be displayed at this weekend’s Supercars round at The Bend.

Arriving directly from Porsche Motorsport’s Weissach headquarters in Germany, the new model provides a preview of what to expect when Porsche Carrera Cup Australia transitions to the 992-generation next year.

This year, the newest model will be raced in Porsche’s top-tier Supercup series and has already started competing as part of the inaugural Carrera Cup North America title. It is the first race configuration for the 992-generation and to feature a wide-spec turbo body.

It produces 25kw more than its predecessor, currently being used in Porsche Carrera Cup Australia, but in doing so can run in synthetic fuels lowering the amount of Co2 gases it emits.

Other changes included revised drive shafts better suited to racing purposes, a hazard warning light switch if about to stall to warn fellow competitors and redesigned brake calipers to allow pads to be changed more efficiently.

Interest for the new model is high as Porsche Cars Australia head of motorsport Troy Bundy revealed.

“We’ve been overwhelmed by the interest shown in the new 992 GT3 Cup car to date and we are currently assessing all of the expressions of interest we’ve received from motorsport customers across Australia and New Zealand,” Bundy said.

“Given the quality and calibre of the drivers interested, the 2022 grid will be one of the strongest in the series history.”

A special presentation event will be held tonight prior to the second round of Porsche Carrera Cup Australia at The Bend as support to the Supercars.

The current 991-generation was introduced in 2018 and has since proven to be a runaway success.
