This year marks the second time that the Sandown 500 will feature as the official Supercars Championship retro round.
With Red Bull Holden Racing Team having already confirmed it’s retro inspired look for the this years Pirtek Enduro Cup opener, several other teams are expected to follow suit over the next two weeks in the lead up this years Sandown 500.
So we thought we’d dig through the archives and pick out some of our favourite retro and retro inspired liveries from recent years. Here’s our top five retro liveries from the last five years.
5 – EREBUS PENRITE COMMODORE – SANDOWN 2016

Erebus Motorsport worked with sponsor Penrite to celebrate the companies 90th anniversary with a one-off retro inspired livery for David Reynolds and Craig Baird at last years Sandown 500. Some people will argue that DJR Team Penske’s Shell livery was the best livery from that event, we elected to give this one to Erebus Motorsport as DJR already featured heavily in this collection.

4 – NISSAN MOTORSPORT – BATHURST 2015

Nissan Motorsport have produced several great retro liveries since it’s return, however this particular one from Michael Caruso and Dean Fiore’s Nissan Altima for the 2015 Bathurst 1000 to mark the 25th anniversary of the marque’s first Australian Touring Car Championship crown had the most history attached to it.

3 – DJR – BATHURST 2014

Dick Johnson Racing’s history in Australian motorsport gives it some of the most iconic liveries to work with. For the 2014 Bathurst 1000 David Wall and Steven Johnson paid tribute to the 20th anniversary of Dick Johnson and John Bowe’s victory in the 1994 Great Race.

2 – HOLDEN RACING TEAM – TOWNSVILLE 2015

In 2015, the Holden Racing Team (now Walkinshaw/Mobil 1 HSV Racing), ran several retro liveries to pay tribute to the teams 25 year history in the sport. However, it was the throwback to the 1997 livery that marked Peter Brock’s final year in the Australian Touring Car Championship that the team ran in Townsville that stood out the most.

Who could forget when DJR revisted their famous Greens’ Tuf livery for Bathurst 2013 to mark the 30 years since Dick Johnson ran the Greens’ Tuf backed XE Falcon in the 1983 edition of the Great Race.

It originated from the Australian Touring Car Championship (ATCC), which held its first race in 1960 at Gnoo-Blas in Orange, New South Wales. The ATCC evolved over the years, and in 1997, it was rebranded as the V8 Supercars Championship, eventually becoming the Supercars Championship we know today.
Some of the leading drivers in the history of the Supercars Championship include Peter Brock, who is often referred to as the "King of the Mountain" for his nine victories at the Bathurst 1000, a race that is considered one of the biggest in the series.
