Teams regain starting choice for enduros

The start of the 2024 Bathurst 1000

By Thomas Miles

Teams will have the freedom of selecting which driver will start the enduros again after Supercars announced some key Enduro Cup tweaks.

Last year for the first time the choice was taken away from teams as they were forced to put the main driver in for the start of the 2025 Bathurst 1000.

This impacted the strategy options available for the 161-lap classic and after much discussion, Supercars has done a U-turn after just one attempt.

Now main or co-drivers will have the privilege of lining up on the grid ahead of the Great Race.

In addition to that decision, Supercars has also made the call to slightly reduce the fuel tank limit for the enduros.

For both the Airtouch 500 at The Bend and Bathurst 1000 showpieces, the fuel tank capacities have been reduced from 133L to 121L.

Supercars Chief Motorsport Officer Tim Edwards explained these changes have been made to add further intrigue in the lane.

“Strategy is what makes endurance racing so exciting,” he said.

“These updates have been introduced to strike the right balance for great racing at two critical events on the calendar.

“By adjusting the fuel capacity, we’re encouraging teams to be creative in how they structure their stints.

“It adds complexity to strategy, opens up opportunities to pass through pit stops, and keeps the racing alive right to the final stint.”

The final Supercars round before the enduros is this weekend at Queensland Raceway.
