Murray knows a ‘three’ is possible

Murray set a hot pace

By Thomas Miles

Rapid rookie Cooper Murray believes he was on for a rare 2m3s lap to stun Mount Panorama in Friday Qualifying.

Fans were in awe as the times kept falling with less than a tenth covering the top six in a rapid and thrilling Friday qualifying session headed by Brodie Kostecki’s 2:04.0307.

However, a rare 2m03s time could have been possible if Murray simply completed his final lap.

The Erebus Motorsport rookie has been one of the stories of the weekend so far, alongside Jobe Stewart.

The #99 Camaro looks as fast as it did at the hands of Kostecki last year, especially over one lap.

In fact, Murray is certain he would have beaten Kostecki by around two tenths if he did not gone on at Murray’s Corner.

Despite the mistake, Murray is still certainly in the mix, being fifth, but 0.0629s away from the lead.

“That was good fun, my first full time Bathurst qualifying being nine hundredths off pole,” he told Auto Action.

“I was on for a (two minute) 3.8 until blew it at the last corner, so we know its there and we just have to get pole at the Shootout.

Considering the raw speed during the biggest weekend of the year, is Murray feeling the pressure?

“No, I am just going out there and doing my thing,” he replied.

“I have an amazing team behind me and the car has been amazing this weekend, which allows me to do what I do best.

“I know if I do the best I can and team does the best they can, we are in with a shot no matter what.

“Jobe is doing a great job and did a green tyre run and was only two tenths off my time.

“I have full confidence come Sunday we can do whatever strategy we want with two A drives doing the best we can.

“We are here to get that trophy back to Betty on Sunday.”

Meanwhile, the other side of the Erebus garage, Jack Le Brocq and Jarrod Hughes will start the Great Race 17th.

The #9 Erebus Camaro was a notable absentee from the final laps, electing not to do a late run along with the rest of the field.

“We did four runs and were not sure if we had the fuel to do a fifth, so that was a bit of shame, but it is what it is,” Le Brocq explained.

“We have been struggling a bit for confidence and balance and have some work to do.

“We will work hard to come up with a game plan for Sunday.”
