Ford leaders play down aero changes, Xiberras ‘confused’

Courtney at the bend

Unsurprisingly, Ford and Chevrolet team owners have different takes on the pre-enduro aero tweaks to the Mustang.

On the eve of the AirTouch 500 at The Bend, Supercars announced changes to the Vehicle Specification Document.

This focused solely on the Mustang, which has reverted to aero kit parts seen following the 2023 Great Race, where Ford dominated the end of the year, winning all four races it was used.

In the first practice session at The Bend, Ford filled the top five positions with rookie Aaron Cameron leading the way.

But due to the truncated nature of the session with rain a factor, WAU’s Carl Faux and BRT’s Tim Blanchard played it down, stating drivers did not notice any changes.

“There was no talk of it in the garage so far,” Blanchard said.

“Everything is status quo, and once everyone is on the same tyres at the same time, is when conversations will arise.”

“We have bedded brakes and done one run with the main guys before it rained, so from our point of view nothing has changed,” Faux said.

However, PremiAir’s Peter Xiberras is far from happy in the Camaro camp.

He does not understand the timing of the changes.

In the announcement, Supercars CEO James Warburton said Ford and GM “reluctantly agreed to the changes.”

“I am a bit confused,” Xiberras said.

“I don’t understand why they spend gazillions of dollars on wind tunnel testing and engine dynos and then mid season we start playing with it.

“You don’t really get a voice because they just dropped it on us yesterday.”
