New Bend schedule for TCR World Tour

TCR World Tour at Portugal

By Thomas Miles

Fans will have to wait an extra day to see TCR World Tour return to Australia for the first time in two years due to freight delays at this weekend’s AirTouch 500 at The Bend.

The TCRs were set to join the rest on Friday where the World Tour stars would enjoy an hour of practice.

However, they will now just have a single 30-minute session bright and early at 7.20 local time Saturday morning.

Teams will have just over an hour to make set-up changes before qualifying fires up at 9.00 and racing takes centre stage in the afternoon.

Crew members will already be flat out as they face the prospect of building cars overnight to be ready for Saturday’s schedule.

Cars and equipment were supposed to arrive at the paddock on Monday and Tuesday, but global freight delays have pushed that back to Friday afternoon, creating a very tight turnaround.

It will create quite a sight in the evening as teams find themselves in a race against time.

“This is motorsport theatre at its rawest and most passionate,” Marcello Lotti WSC President said.

“The commitment of our teams and drivers means fans will get to witness not just the racing, but the extraordinary human effort it takes to put world championship cars on the grid.

“This is the heart and soul of motorsport — and we will literally build these cars overnight.”

Alistair MacDonald, CEO of Shell V-Power Motorsport Park, said he encourages fans to catch a glimpse of the rebuilds.

“This is a race against time, with crews building cars through the night under lights in the Skidpan,” he said.

“Our 3,000 campers and fans alike are welcome to watch the drama unfold. It evokes memories of Bathurst 1983 when Dick Johnson and his team famously rebuilt a car overnight just to make the start line.

“That same drama and passion will be on show here in South Australia this weekend.”
