New Supercars role revealed for Howard

Shane Howard

By Thomas Miles

Former CEO Shane Howard will stay in Supercars in the role of Chair of the Supercars Commission.

From 2022 to 2025, Howard led Supercars in the leading CEO role and oversaw the arrival of Gen3.

But midway through this year, he stepped aside to allow for the return of James Warburton to the role.

Despite leaving the CEO position, it was clear both Howard and Supercars wanted him to stay in the category.

He will now lead the Supercars Commission in addition to his new role of being a Board Member and Strategic Adviser to Warburton.

He replaces former FIA F1 race director Micheal Masi, who was on board for around three years.

Howard’s appointment is far from the only change within the Supercars Commission, which is now going to be run under a new model.

It will now comprise exclusively of Team Owners and “key Supercars Motorsport personnel” such as Warburton.

“I’m honoured to take on the role of Commission Chair at such a pivotal time for Supercars,” Howard said.

“I’ve had the privilege of working closely with our teams, partners and stakeholders for many years, and I look forward to continuing that collaboration as we shape the next chapter of our

Championship.

“The Commission will play a vital role in ensuring the sport remains strong, competitive and

innovative as we welcome Toyota and other opportunities for growth.”

Warburton explained why the changes to the Commission had to be made ahead of the incoming arrival of Toyota.

“We are delighted to welcome Shane Howard as Chair of the Commission,” he said.

“Shane brings extensive experience and a deep understanding of our sport that will be invaluable as we navigate this exciting period of growth and transformation.

“With three Homologation Teams and a highly active Technical Working Group, we felt the time was right to refocus the Commission’s structure around Team Owners.

“We are entering a critical phase of growth, so these changes will ensure we continue to deliver for our fans, teams, partners, and stakeholders while setting up the sport for long-term success.”

The changes have already received praise from team owners such as Rod Nash and Brad Jones.

“The move to have Shane Howard as Chair is a smart decision for the sport,” Tickford’s Nash said.

“Shane has the respect of the paddock and understands both the commercial and technical aspects of Supercars.

“With the Commission now focused around team owners, having Shane’s leadership will provide balance and direction as we navigate the future together.”

“Shane’s appointment is a positive step forward for the Commission,” Jones said.

“He knows this Championship inside out and has the trust of the teams, which is vital as we look to strengthen the technical and governance structures of Supercars.

“The restructured Commission gives us, as team owners, a stronger voice, and with Shane chairing, I’m confident we can achieve the best outcomes for the sport.”
