Fans had to wait to see the Duggan Family Hotels Touring Car Masters race at Bathurst, but it was worth it as Angus Fogg produced a stunning drive to victory.
The lowly starting spot of 21st did not deter Kiwi Fogg or his Mustang as he flew to glory inside just seven laps.
Behind him, it was a wild battle to be the first Australian with Adam Garwood making some late moves to snare second as just eight tenths covered him, Steven Johnson, Scott Cameron, Ryan Hansford and Joel Heinrich.
After the morning’s opener was reduced to two corners, the second attempt of racing was much more successful, with the first laps staying green.
This allowed the top four to produce an exciting battle for the lead as they ran nose to tail up Mountain Straight.
It was a true Holden v Ford battle with Hansford getting a push from fellow Torana Fisher, while Garwood’s Capri was in the slipstream of Zukanovic’s XD Falcon.
The Holdens prevailed as Hansford led Fisher to the top two, while a lap later the Fords were battling again as Garwood snared third.
By the end of the third lap he had Fisher in his sights and stole second with a successful dive at Murray’s Corner.
The Jesus Racing Torana soon dropped out of the top three altogether when Zukanovic picked him off at The Chase.
Further back, championship leader Heinrich was struggling to make up significant ground despite a stunning move around the outside of Jamie Tilley at The Cutting.
He could only manage eighth, having been one of many cars eaten up by Fogg.
In just four laps, Fogg surged from 22nd to fifth and had the top four in his sights.
Nothing was stopping the black and gold Mustang as it flew to the front.
The first victim was Zukanovic at The Chase, while Garwood was picked off with a similar amount of ease two corners later.
Now all that stood between Fogg and a stunning win was Hansford, and his Multispares Racing Torana did not have fast enough legs to offer much of a fight for the Mustang.
Fogg flew past down Mountain Straight and completed the move before they got to the crest.
While Fogg completed his remarkable charge, the race was far from over.
At the same time as the lead change happened, Zukanovic’s XD Falcon expired in a massive cloud of smoke, forcing him into retirement on the penultimate lap.
Heinrich had worked his way back to sixth and suddenly found himself in the fight for victory.
The top six ran nose to tail, with Johnson and Cameron also in play.
Garwood made the first move, pouncing on Hansford, and the reigning champion even thought about snatching the lead.
He had a look underneath Fogg on the final lap at The Chase, but could not quite get it down.
Garwood still got his elbows out wide enough to defend second place as it was on behind him.
Hansford slipped back to fifth as both Johnson and Cameron made moves at the final corner.
With the top six taking the chequered flag nose to tail, it was an exciting finish to an exciting race.
The third and final Touring Car Masters race is at 11.15 AEDT Sunday morning.
