Feeney flies to maiden Townsville pole

Broc Feeney took his qualifying dominance to a new location, taking his first Townsville pole with a lap no one else could challenge in the Top 10 Shootout.
Boosted by his Saturday victory, Feeney flew in the one-lap dash and produced a 1:12.9536.
Being the only driver in the 1m12s window, next best Matt Payne was the best part of three tenths away.
Anton De Pasquale made significant ground from ninth to third as the Tickford teammates, led by Cameron Waters rounded out the top five.
Unfortunately, for the first third of the session fans had no idea what was going on with Natsoft not working and TV timing nowhere to be seen.
As a result, there were the comical scenes of commentator Niel Crompton being forced to ask Waters and De Pasquale what their lap times were to simply get a vague idea.
Eventually, it fired up, and normal service resumed once Allen was the third car on the track.
P4 Cameron Waters 1:13.3486 +0.3950
On fresh rears he found the Turn 2 apex and had a minimal slide on exit, but nothing major.
Crossed the kerbs well through the Reid Park section and went right up against the concrete coming out of Turn 12.
“It was okay, but a few areas I could have tidied up. Track grip is a bit low, so it is what it is,” Waters said.
P3 Anton De Pasquale 1:13.2702 +0.3166
Four fresh tyres to start the lap aggressively and did not put a foot wrong to sneak ahead of Waters by a slender 0.0784s.
“It was okay, didn’t come in as good as I hoped but you never know. It was a clean lap,” De Pasquale said.
P9 Kai Allen 1:13.7209 +0.7673
Rookie Allen enjoys the Townsville streets and had a crack on four green tyres.
He pushed the limits and went right up against the wall, going through the flat Turn 10, but ended up four tenths adrift.
“It was a bit wild there and didn’t quite piece it together and warm the tyres up,” he said.
P8 Chaz Mostert 1:13.6279 +0.6743
Mostert enjoyed four brand new tyres and was determined to make the most of them after Saturday’s qualifying struggles.
Used all the road available coming out of Turn 3 and Turn 6 and started the final sector a tenth down on De Pasquale.
Had some small rear locking through the hairpin and that cost a further two tenths.
“Pretty disappointing to be honest, and I don’t know why the grip didn’t come up. We had brake issues in qualifying and didn’t want to risk changing the rear rotors,” Mostert said.
P10 Ryan Wood 1:13.8910 +0.9374
Wood was in the same situation as Mostert, but had used tyres and had a moment bouncing through the Turn 3 bumps.
Was just a tenth adrift through the opening two sectors, but struggled in the final split and ended up a distant six tenths away, but a lot of that was down to the rubber.
“Not too bad but stuffed it up a bit at Turn 3 and the first chicane,” Wood said.
P7 Will Brown 1:13.6137 +0.6601
The reigning champion enjoyed fresh rears and the car did not turn brilliantly through the first heavy braking zone.
The #1 Camaro wagged its tail out of Turn 3 and was three tenths down.
Despite nailing the second sector and being fastest at the time, he was still more than two tenths adrift.
Ended up slotting in 0.0142s clear of Mostert to drop in behind De Pasquale and Waters.
“I struggled and went a bit deep (in first sector) but the rest of the lap was pretty good,” Brown said.
POLE Broc Feeney 1:12.9536
Feeney fired it up straight away and blitzed the first sector, being already a tenth clear.
This was critical as it was an area of improvement for the young man and he nailed it
Danced his way through esses to find a further two tenths.
Despite a small slide through Turn 12, he flew to the first 1m12s time in the one-lap dash and enjoy a comfy three-tenth margin over previous leader De Pasquale.
The special performance that set too high of a bar.
“I have been struggling in the first sector, so to nail turn 2 was good. I am pretty happy with that lap,” Feeney said.
P5 Thomas Randle 1:13.3629 +0.4093
Randle got the car squarely turned through he first two right-handers on used tyres to be best of the rest behind Feeney in the first sector.
A small slide through Turn 6 saw him lose some time and ended up four tenths adrift, slotting just behind Waters.
“It was not too bad. Little less grip than I expected,” Randle said.
P6 Will Davison 1:13.4441 +0.4905
Boosted by his best Townsville qualifying on Friday, Davison is enjoying a strong weekend back at the front of the field and had a decent start to the lap on used tyres.
Used all the kerb coming out of Turn 6 and kept I clean in his 80th shootout to put a solid lap in on used rubber despite a moment coming out of the final turn.
“It was pretty good. On used tyres unfortunately, so knew it would be a big compromise. Balance felt good, but got too much wheelspin coming out of the final corner and lost a bit of time,” Davison said.
P2 Matt Payne 1:13.2333 +0.2797
The man to beat after topping qualifying with the lap of the weekend and produced the best first sector of everyone aside from Feeney.
On a fresh set aside from the used front, he pushed hard and used all the road to be best of the rest.
However, he still could not challenge Feeney.
