Townsville supports: Stewart and Vaughan speedy in Super2

Jobe Stewart

By Thomas Miles

Super2 has returned, making its annual trip to Townsville with Jobe Stewart and Brad Vaughan showing early speed in practice.

Determined to bounce back from a tough round at Tasmania, Stewart shot out of the blocks.

The Image Racing driver was in a league of his own in Practice 1, topping it by an imperious three tenths.

He was the only driver in the 1m14s window with his  1:14.9474 a commanding 0.3287s clear of next best Cody Burcher.

In an encouraging sign for Image Racing, rookie Max Geoghegan sat third ahead of teammate Jarrod Hughes.

It was clear the Holden ZB Commodore was the car to have after the top nine spots were all filled by the make with Reuben Goodall the best Mustang in 10th.

The early morning session ran uninterrupted from start to finish.

Stewart showed more speed in Practice 2, being third fastest and just 0.1417s off the pace.

Leading the way was Brad Vaughan, who experienced a very dramatic session in the BJR ZB Commodore.

At one stage, Vaughan was at a stop after a wheel departed his #80 Holden.

Despite the scare, he ended it on top by posting a 1:14.5954, which was a tenth too much for championship leader Rylan Gray.

It was not the only moment of the session with Matt Hillyer finding the Turn 3 tyres early on.

Super2 returns with qualifying at 9.25 AEST before the first 40-minute race at 13.35 AEST.

In V8 SuperUte Series qualifying Cameron Crick showed his strength by taking a dominant pole.

Crick’s 1:24.1617 was a commanding 0.6321s clear of fellow Isuzu D-Max driver Adam Marjoram.

Cody Brewczynski, Aaron Borg and David Sieders were the only others within a second.

The V8 SuperUtes have two races on Saturday at 8.15 and 11.25 AEST.

The Toyota GR Cup saw Lachlan Evennett take a hard-fought pole after some thrilling battles with Ollie Wickham and Declan Fraser.

Just 0.082s covered the top three with Evennett’s 1:27.4084 being enough, while guest Supercars star Tim Slade could only manage 29th in the big 33-car field.

Porsche Sprint Challenge also staged two practice sessions that were shared by Jake Santalucia and Kiwi Tom Bewley.
