Brilliant Buckley wins on TA2 debut

Alice Buckley has enjoyed a dream TA2 Muscle Car Series debut by becoming the category’s first female winner.
In just her third race in the Chevrolet Castrol backed Camaro, Buckley soared to a historic victory at Queensland Raceway.
Boosted by the success, she doubled up in the finale to enjoy a perfect Sunday that also included a pole position.
The beaming Buckley could not hide her smile after making history.
“It feels amazing,” said Buckley after her historic win.
“I just wanted to back it up after qualifying. It feels really good. Rookie, on debut, and I’ve just won one of the races. Could not be happier.
“Thank you to all the boys who have put countless hours in, days and nights to get this car where it needs to be.”
Buckley had already impressed on debut by putting her Camaro on the front row in her first qualifying session on Saturday before finishing fourth and eighth.
But she shone on Sunday, soaring to a stunning pole position by posting a 1:12.3360, which was two tenths clear of next best Ben Gomersall, while dominant championship leader Jarrod Hughes was third.
Rolling starts was a point of improvement for Buckley after the opening day and she nailed them on Sunday.
Despite the occasional Safety Car period, Buckley dominated the 13-lap opener from lights to flag and ensured the dominant Hughes had to settle for second.
Josh Thomas rounded out the podium behind the leading Camaros.
Boosted by making history, Buckley went back to back in the finale.
She had to overcome significant pressure to do so, with a deflating tyre adding to the challenge of keeping a charging Thomas at bay.
Just two tenths was the difference when the chequered flag dropped as Josh Thomas also stood on the podium.
Hughes struggled and drifted from second to fifth, but his championship lead is still intact.
It was an attritional race with seven drivers failing to finish.
TA2 stays in Queensland Raceway for a follow up round on August 15-17.
