Team mistake costs Waters

Cam Waters at Darwin

By Thomas Miles

Tickford believed Cameron Waters could have finished as high as sixth, but a team error saw his race fall apart in the final four laps.

Waters was running 10th with four laps to go when his left rear wheel suddenly parted company from the Monster Mustang.

The loss of the wheel saw Waters rotate before crawling back to the lane to finish the race last and a lap down.

Tickford fans would need no reminder of such an incident, given the #6 suffered the same pain at the 2024 Bathurst 500 opener.

Whilst Waters retains fourth in the standings, the gap to leader Broc Feeney has increased from 153 to 320 points.

Tickford Team Manager Matt Roberts revealed it was a team error during the Lap 50 stop, caused the race-changing incident.

“We weren’t quite happy with that second stop,” Roberts said.

“Unfortunately, that’s what happened today, a mistake in the lane, so the team can own that one.

“We’ll go back here and regroup, look at it and analyse it because ultimately, it ended Cam’s day.

“He was looking really good there at one point.

“We were hoping to get try and get him in top six, between six and 10 because he was driving a ripper.

“We will get behind it, and move on.”

It was also a tough day for Thomas Randle as he got bullied in the opening stint and struggled to recover, coming home 19th.

Roberts admitted Randle was not feeling great after a tough and hot day behind the wheel.

“Unfortunately Tommy had a really tough race and got a bit banged up at the start,” Roberts said.

“Once he found his rthym and got a fresh pair of boots he got back into the race, but did not have much pace, so we will need to look at that as well.

“He is in the ice bath at the moment and is pretty cooked. We have the doctors down there and he will be alright.”
