It’s no secret that the best drivers have extra mental capacity that makes the driving almost automatic.

They have the ability to talk on the radio, feed information to their engineers, see what the others are doing and so on, and this is one area the McLaren driver believes you can only access through experience.

For Piastri, “it’s mainly something that comes with experience. I think that when you are more comfortable with the car, more comfortable with the team, just more comfortable with yourself in the world, it’s one those things that come naturally – you naturally gain more capacity to do other things.”

He openly admits that “certainly, in my first race, I didn’t have the same capacity that I do now, some 50 races later. It’s something that you do gain with experience and it depends a lot on how comfortable you are with the car.

“Every time you jump into the car, everything comes naturally, so that you don’t have to think about it as much. That much is obvious. But if there’s things that you really need to work at hard, if your driving style doesn’t suit the car you have very well and you need to change certain things, then it takes time to learn how to use your mental capacity on that, for it to become natural eventually – and then you can start to focus on other things.

“That’s why I would say it definitely comes with experience and just being able to adapt as well.”
