Piastri awarded with Lorenzo Bandini trophy

Piastri is awarded the Lorenzo bandini trophy

By Timothy Neal

Oscar Piastri has been awarded with the Lorenzo Bandini trophy ahead of the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix, becoming the third Aussie to receive the honour.

The award is a ceramic trophy adorned with a replica of Lorenzo Bandini’s Ferrari 312/67, and is offered to a driver for their deeds from the previous season. The award is given in Brisighella, a village in Emilia-Romagna.

Judged by a panel of 12 motorsport Journalists and former Formula One team members, other Aussies to have won the award were Mark Webber in 2006, and Daniel Ricciardo in 2014. The award began in 1992.

The value of the award is based upon the overall manner of the driver, their fullness of character and their approach to racing.

Bandini, a popular character in his time, died from injuries sustained at the Monaco Grand Prix in 1957. The Italian driver won the Austrian Grand Prix in 1964 during his 42 race Formula One career, whilst he also won the Targa Florio in 1965.

Over 100,000 people attended the funeral of Bandini before he was laid to rest in Milan.

After winning the award, Piastri wrote, “Honoured to receive the Lorenzo Bandini trophy. Grazie a tutti!” On his socials.

Lorenzo Bandini, Ferrari

Ferrari driver Lorenzo Bandini competed at 42 Grand Prix between 1961 and 1967

It’s another enormous weekend for Piastri, who leads the Word Drivers Championship by 16 points over McLaren teammate Lando Norris after winning in China, before then going on a three race tear through Bahrain, Jeddah, and Miami.

In Piastri’s debut season he missed the chance of competing at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix due to severe flooding in the area, before missing out the podium with a fourth placed finish last season.
