Feeney stays on top as Evans crash cuts qualifying short

Once again the fight for a Top 10 Shootout berth has been cut short by a big crash at Turn 8, this time by Jaxon Evans.
Just as drivers were in the middle of their final push laps, Evans had a huge shunt at Turn 8, bringing the red flag out in the final minutes, leaving no chance for a resumption.
The BJR driver made the same mistake as those on Friday, clipping the inside kerb.
Frontally the Kiwi was okay, but the #50 Camaro was not, suffering significant front end damage after going head on into the inside wall.
It meant qualifying was determined on the opening runs that were led by Saturday winner Broc Feeney.
Feeney’s 1:19.5460 was 0.0405s clear of Cameron Waters and WAU rookie Ryan Wood.
Chaz Mostert, Will Brown, Thomas Randle, Will Davison, Brodie Kostecki, Nick Percat and Anton De Pasquale secured tickets to the one-lap dash.
Matt Payne was one of the hard-luck stories, being 11th and on track to improve, setting a purple second sector.
But just like everyone else, he could not complete the lap as the session was cut short by the Evans crash.
Mark Winterbottom and Tim Slade will start their final solo Supercars races from 15th and 16th respectively.
The session started in bizarre fashion with Percat being spun on the out lap.
On the run up Wakefield Street Percat was on the racing line, while Ryan Wood was warming up his tyres and struck the MSR Camaro on corner entry.
Percat rotated 180 degrees, but was able to carry on.
The first into the 1m19s was Brown, but his lap was immediately bettered by Feeney and Mostert, who were a tenth clear.
Kostecki and Percat also joined the 1m19s club on their second laps.
Waters and Wood did it with their third as the Monster Mustang came within 0.0176s of leader Feeney.
Subs Murray and Allen emerged 13th and 19th respectively, while De Pasquale was on the bubble in 10th just ahead of Payne and Reynolds.
With more sunlight on the track, drivers and teams elected to do a warm up lap at the start of the final run.
But in hindsight it proved to be an unfortunate call due to Evans’ heavy crash.
BJR now faces an unlikely race against time to fix the #50 Camaro ahead of race 2, which begins at 15.15 ACDT, while the Shootout is at 12.35.
