Van Gisbergen to race Cup car at ROVAL

VAN GISBERGEN

By Thomas Miles

Shane van Gisbergen has secured a last minute NASCAR Cup Series start for this weekend’s race at the Charlotte ROVAL.

Van Gisbergen will race with a new number for Kaulig Racing when the NASCAR field heads to the Charlotte Motor Speedway road course where the Kiwi is expected to be a contender.

It means the Auckland born star will perform double duties for the second time in as many weeks and one year on from his last Supercars win at the Bathurst 1000.

The Charlotte drive will be the 10th time van Gisberegn races in both the NASCAR Cup and Xfinity Series on the same weekend.

Having steered the #16 in the nine previous top tier appearances of 2024, the Kiwi will race with the #13 due to teammate AJ Allmendinger already confirmed to chase back to back wins on the ROVAL.

Van Gisbergen is fresh from an impressive drive at Talladega where he not only survived getting caught in a monster 23-car wreck, but led nine laps on his way to an impressive 15th place.

It was his second best Cup Series result of 2024 following his second place at Watkins Glen.

“That was a wild race!” Van Gisbergen said after Talladega.

“Had a lot of fun battling up front and leading some laps.

“Our WeatherTech Chevy Camaro showed a lot of speed and it was awesome to race in the pack and continue to learn every lap.

“Glad we missed the big wreck there at the end and were able to have a solid finish.

“Proud of my No. 16 Kaulig Racing team and looking forward to racing the Cup car at the Charlotte Roval.”

It will be a vital weekend for van Gisbergen in the NASCAR Xfinity Series as well as he hopes to use his road course skills to keep his season alive.

After being an innocent bystander in a crash at Talladega, van Gisbergen finds himself 21 points and three places below the Playoffs cutline.

This means van Gisbergen will need to collect a lot of stage points and a strong result at the Charlotte ROVAL to secure a berth in Round of 8, which begins after this weekend.

It also ensures fans will enjoy a dream weekend of motorsport with the Xfinity Series starting at 7.00 AEST on Bathurst Day and the Cup Series kicking off from 5.00 AEST on Monday, October 14.
