Piastri makes further history with Spa success

Piastri celebrates Spa win

By Thomas Miles

Oscar Piastri continues to leave a bigger presence on the Aussie F1 history books with his Belgian Grand Prix win, the latest in a growing career.

After swamping Lando Norris with an expert restart from the exit of La Source to the end of the Kemmel Straight and not looking back, Piastri made a timely return to the top step of the podium in Belgium.

Having seen teammate Norris trim his title lead to eight points after back-to-back wins in Austria and Great Britain, the Australian responded perfectly at the driver’s track that is Spa Francorchamps.

But in addition to rebuilding his lead to a more healthy 16 points one race before the summer break, Piastri added some more special records to his ever-expanding legacy.

The Spa success was his sixth of the year, which pushes Piastri to new, unprecedented heights for an Australian.

The previous most wins in a single F1 season by an Australian was five, achieved by Jack Brabham and Alan Jones.

Brabham took five straight wins at the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Great Britain and Portugal in his second title-winning campaign in 1960 with Cooper.

Two decades later, Jones drove Williams to a maiden championship with victories in Argentina, France, Great Britain, Canada and USA.

Now in 2025 Piastri has beaten the high water mark of those champions following glories at China, Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, Miami Spain and now Belgium.

It also pushed the 24-year-old’s career tally to eight wins, the same amount of Daniel Ricciardo.

Ricciardo reached the mark after 258 races, while Piastri has raced there in just 59.

Now only Brabham (14) Alan Jones (12) and Mark Webber (9) sit ahead of him, and all are within reach this season, given Piastri’s trajectory and the MCL38’s speed over the rest of the field.

“I knew that lap one was going to be probably my best chance of winning the race,” Piastri said of his win and the vital Lap 1 move.

“I got a good exit out of Turn 1 and lifted as little as I dared through Eau Rouge and that was enough. The rest of the race we managed really well. Struggling a little bit at the end, maybe the Medium wasn’t the best for the last five or six laps, but we had it mostly under control, which is what I wanted.

“I was pretty disappointed with myself after yesterday but turns out starting second at Spa is not too bad after all.”

Next up is where it all started last year, Hungary and who knows how far Piastri will climb in the future. It is a special time to be alive Aussie F1 fans.
