Gardner climbs WSBK table in Czechia

By Timothy Neal

Continuing a big few weeks for Remy Gardner – including the announcement of a second MotoGP ride for 2024 – a consistent World SuperBike round at Czechia’s Autodrom Most saw another healthy points gain.

Gardner took on back-to-back rounds in the UK and central Eastern Europe following his surprise MotoGP appearance for Yamaha at the Sachsenring, with the Donington round proving a bust for the GYTR GRT Yamaha team, whilst the Autodrom proved a strong one for Gardner.

With two fifth place finishes before a round high P4 in the finale, Gardner now finds himself seventh in the championship.

And although Toprak Razgatlıoglu is a near untouchable force having won team straight races on his BMW, Gardner is capable of climbing even higher before the year is out.

“Honestly, I’m a little bit disappointed (with the P4), but let’s take this as a positive thing,” Gardner said on Sunday.

“To be disappointed with fourth place is a good sign, it means we have much more potential to express ourselves.

“In Race 2, we were also lucky in not being involved in the Turn 1 crash. Then, I was able to build a good race, with a strong race pace until the end.

“Unfortunately, I couldn’t close the gap to the final podium place, I felt there was the potential, but we’ve got to be satisfied with the weekend overall.”

Regarding his second MotoGP comeback round, Gardner will this time fill in for wildcard rider Cal Crutchlow, with the British round set to serve as another potential job interview for when Yamaha adds two more YZR-M1’s to its lineup via the Ducati-defecting Pramac squad.

Gardner said it will be a thrill to race at the high-speed Silverstone, with the last time he raced there being on a struggling KTM RC16 machine.

“First of all, I just want to say that I hope that Cal can get better soon,” he said.

“I saw him last week, and I hope he can get back to riding and help the MotoGP project along. Obviously, it’s a nice opportunity to get to ride the M1 again, so I’m really happy.

“Silverstone is a track I like, and hopefully I can give some more important feedback to Yamaha and the team and continue to enjoy the moment.

“Thanks to everyone at Yamaha, and I’m looking forward to riding again!”

With the WSBK Championship going on a summer break until the August 10-12 round in Portugal, Gardner’s next outing will be at the Silverstone MotoGP round on August 4.
