Brown edges Waters in pre-quali burst

By Thomas Miles

Supercars championship leader Will Brown has reasserted his position at the top by being fastest in a tight Practice 2 at Wanneroo.

Brown bounced back brilliantly from finishing Friday 18th to being fastest in the following session with a 54.9036.

The #87 Triple Eight Camaro was just 0.0190s ahead of Cameron Waters, with the likes of Thomas Randle and Ryan Wood also within a tenth.

It sets the stage for a thrilling qualifying with the top nine covered by a tenth and the entire field spread across just six tenths.

To make things more intriguing, drivers are finding more time from their second lap on the Soft tyre.

The session got off to a slow start with only two flying laps were possible before another red flag arrived, this time for debris.

Wood was on top of the timesheets at the break with a 55.1603, which was 0.1248s ahead of Anton De Pasquale and three tenths clear of Randle as Mustangs filled the top six positions.

Brown was the top Camaro in seventh, six tenths away after being the first on track.

One driver that did not record a lap was Tim Slade, who said the “steering rack is dead” but was eventually able to get on track and finish 20th.

It set-up a 15-minute qualifying simulation where a number of drivers went straight out on green tyres.

Brown and Waters were fast straight away, sneaking ahead of Randle by half a tenth.

Chaz Mostert and Matt Payne also punched out fast laps, but they could not quite match Brown’s second attempt which lowered the benchmark into the 54’s.

The Monster Mustang and Wood soon joined the #87 Red Bull Camaro in the 54s window and less than a tenth covered the trio.

Inside the final five minutes Mark Winterbottom briefly gave Brown company as a fellow Camaro in the top five, but ended up sixth.

Randle also made a late move rising into the top three, but there was little change elsewhere.

Brown spent the final minutes in the pits and his time was unchallenged.

Winterbottom was the only other Chevrolet in the top eight that featured rookies Wood and local Aaron Love.

Andre Heimgartner and David Reynolds completed the top 10 with Brodie Kostecki was 12th and Broc Feeney down in 19th.

With what is expected to be the fastest session of the weekend out of the way, attention now turns to the first three-part qualifying of the year at 12.00AWST/14.00AEST.
