Triple Eight and WAU hit by points penalties

By Thomas Miles

Following pit lane infringements during Saturday’s Taupo Super400 opener, both Triple Eight and WAU have been hit by penalties.

The most notable incident occurred to Chaz Mostert when his promising pursuit of victory was cut short by a loose right rear wheel.

After completing a final tyre change on lap 40, Mostert completed his out lap before it was apparent his right rear was loose as he approached Turn 1.

Then as he exited the right-handed Turn 4, the wheel suddenly parted company all together and careered into the barriers with a little kick from the #25 Mustang.

Mostert managed to make the finish, Albert a lap down in 22nd.

Whilst at the time WAU was unsure what had happened, it has been slapped with the deduction of 30 championship points and a fine of $1,500 for a breach of the International Sporting Code’s Appendix L, Chapter IV (Code of Driving Conduct on Circuits), Article 5 g) – (Cars may not be released from a garage or pit stop position in an unsafe condition) – regarding Car 25’s pit stop (after which the right rear wheel came away from the Car).

It has proven to be costly as WAU has slipped from fifth to seventh in the teams standings behind both DJR and MSR.

Triple Eight Race Engineering has suffered the same fate for a similar, but less noticeable incident.

Will Brown was one of the earliest to complete the final stop on lap 28 but as his front left was coming off, a wheel night flew off and into the fast lane.

This found Triple Eight in breach of Rule D11.7.6 – (All parts and equipment must be kept entirely within the working lane of Pit Lane at all times).

However, the reduction of 30 points has had little impact on Triple Eight’s commanding position at the top of the teams championship with an imposing 379-point lead over Grove Racing.

The second and final race of the Taupo Super400 will begin soon at 13.05 AEST.

Podcast: We’re going to Taupo… Tow Paw… Whatever. Supercars is back!

After a break that feels like months, the Supercars Championship is back and headed across the ditch to Taupo in the middle of the North Island. And yes, Brodie Kostecki will be there! As will the rain.

Somehow, the rain will also be in China for F1’s return to 中国. Philip Island was stunning on the weekend, just gone, if a little cold, but we chatted about whether Supercars should return to the land of penguins.

Plus, there’s more… all the news in the way only the Auto Action RevLimiter can deliver.
