How Waters reflects on NASCAR debut

By Thomas Miles

Despite his NASCAR Truck Series debut ending early at Martinsville, Cameron Waters enjoyed the “fun, robust” racing around Martinsville.

Waters was sitting in and around the top 20 throughout the first 150 laps until lap 176 when his night was done after going up the rear of Jake Garcia in a multi-car incident at turn 4.

His first NASCAR Truck Series event was squeezed into the one day with Practice, Qualifying and the 200-lap race all taking place on Friday around the “Paperclip”.

Reflecting on the incident itself, the Supercars driver said he had “nowhere to go” but it did not diminish his overall experience behind the wheel of the TRADIE ThorSport #66 Mustang.

“I had so much fun tonight and all day today,” Waters said.

“It is totally different racing from what I usually do and I just wanted to learn. I learned so much.

“There at the end I just had nowhere to go and knocked the radiator out of it. It is a shame but I was having fun and learning and had some awesome battles too.”

When asked about his biggest takeaway, Waters pointed towards the aggressive style of racing which led to a number of spins around the tight half mile circuit.

“Just the racing is so robust. Everyone is into each other,” he said.

“There is still a bit of respect there. It’s totally different from what we do in Australia. I love it.

“You can bump a little and give some back a little without putting someone in. That was probably the biggest thing.”

Despite the revelation that ThorSport Racing have a second drive lined up for Waters at Kansas, confirmed on the Fox Sports TV coverage, Waters had no idea about it and states he has “unfinished business” in Supercars.

“Well, I don’t even know if I am doing Kansas,” Waters said post race.

“Literally, tonight is the first and only race that we have planned to be honest. I just wanted to get through tonight.

“I have stuff to focus on in Supercars. I still have unfinished business back in Australia and I have an amazing team there that I have been trying to win a championship with.

“We will look at the schedule and see if there are any other things we can do but we will have to wait and see.”
