How to win the Darwin Triple Crown in 2024

By Thomas Miles

There will a new way to win the Darwin Triple Crown in 2024 with the winning driver required to perform on all three days of the race weekend.

Recently the usual three-race format has been used since 2020, but in 2024 Hidden Valley Raceway will only host two races, so qualifying will now play a role in deciding the trophy.

A tweak to the Indigenous Round schedule has seen the usual Saturday morning qualifying moved to Friday afternoon.

As a result, to achieve the rare feat of winning the Darwin Triple Crown, a driver must not only win both races, but also top the provisional Friday qualifying session.

Due to qualifying being shifted to Friday afternoon, the original 90 minute practice session has now been reduced to 60 minutes.

A second 30 minute practice session will take place on Saturday morning before the Top 10 Shootout and opening race.

Both races will be held over 137km where one compulsory pit stop and at least two tyre changes are required.

The Darwin Triple Crown has only been won twice in the 18 years since being introduced in 2006.

Scott McLaughlin was the first to take the coveted trophy in a similar system in his all-conquering 2019 season when he won the two races and claimed the Sunday pole position.

McLaughlin was joined by Jamie Whincup the following year when the criteria was opened to the most points accumulated across three races.

It has since reverted back to the greater challenge of scoring a clean sweep and last year Mark Winterbottom, Broc Feeney and Jack Le Brocq shared the wins.

Supercars General Manager of Motorsport Tim Edwards explained the changes.

“By moving the Qualifying session to Friday afternoon, there’s something to drive for every day of the event, which is what fans want to see,” Edwards said.

“Darwin is one of our marquee events on the calendar and we think this format adds another dimension to the on-track product.”

The 2024 Darwin Triple Crown will run from 14-16 June at Hidden Valley Raceway and will again be celebrated as Supercars Indigenous Round.
