How Kostecki is preparing for Supercars comeback

Kostecki erebus winton test aprl 10

By Thomas Miles

Brodie Kostecki is “happy” following his first laps driving the #1 Erebus Motorsport Camaro at Winton today.

Following Monday’s bombshell announcement the championship-winning combination of Kostecki and Erebus have reunited, the 6-time race winner is testing at Winton Motor Raceway.

Having missed the first two rounds at Mount Panorama and Melbourne, the reigning champion admits he has some “catching up” to do getting used to the 2024 spec Camaro with slightly revised aero.

But overall Kostecki is pleased with the progress made during the morning runs.

“It is all about trying to find my feet again,” Kostecki said during the lunch break of the test session.

“I guess it is like riding a bike, you have a few wobbles and then you find your feet.

“I am still a little bit behind the car and have a few small things to work on for the rest of the day.

“But overall we are happy with the day so far and will see how it all ends up.”

Although it has been 136 days since Kostecki last steered a Supercar when he was crowned champion at the Adelaide 500 last November, he has far from stood still during his break.

Whilst the 2024 Supercars season started at Bathurst and Albert Park, the defending champion has been busy staying sharp with Paul Morris at the Norwell Motorplex.

He also revealed he has spent plenty of time with his championship-winning engineer George Commins.

“I have a little bit of catching up to do but I am not too bothered,” Kostecki said.

“I have worked very closely with George and spent the last three days together.

“I have also been out at Norwell a fair bit since the announcement and trying to play catch up.”

Erebus Motorsport CEO Barry Ryan said Kostecki is as committed as ever.

“It is just great to see Brodie happy and healthy and ready to go,” Ryan said.

“He has just done his homework in the background and prepared himself, spent a lot of time with Paul at Norwell on the sim. All the stuff that makes him as good as he is he just does.

“You don’t need to push Brodie. He pushes himself and us hard enough that we don’t need to push him.”

Kostecki will race the #1 Camaro for the first time at the Taupo Super400 on April 19-21.
