NEW Zealander, Codie Banks, has put on a show at the Phillip Island Classic this afternoon, winning the festival of motorsport’s first-ever Formula 5000 Grand Prix in his Lola T332.

Over five races this weekend, including Sunday’s feature run, the Auckland-based competitor proved to be the best driver in a Trans-Tasman field of F5000s from across Australia and NZ.

Banks was awarded the Kevin Bartlett Trophy, and Jack Brabham Driver of the Meeting Award.

“It’s been a bloody good day,” Banks said.

Bartlett is the original owner of Banks’ Lola T332.

“To get the shake from Kevin, that was awesome. He said I did the car proud,” Banks said.

In second and third place respectively were Darcy Russell in a Lola T330 and Frank Harris in a Chevron B24.

Twelve drivers started the F5000 GP, with three not finishing. Further details are listed in the results below.

Banks’ father, David Banks, also raced throughout the weekend, but had challenges with an overheating car.

The F5000 GP marked the conclusion of the four-round 2024 NZ F5000 Tasman Cup Revival Series.

Hooray, F1 is back. Boo, Max Verstappen wins. The Bahrain Grand Prix was a little underwhelming, but at least there was racing… and scandal. There was plenty of scandel, but we don’t do that stuff apparently, so we don’t talk about Red Bull Racing, Christian Horner and Jos Verstappen.
