The sportsmanship behind Bathurst 6 Hour success

By Thomas Miles

If it was not for a kind act of sportsmanship Jayden Ojeda, Simon Hodges and George Miedecke may not have won the 2024 Bathurst 6 Hour.

For the second year in a row, Ojeda produced a special final stint to take out the Easter enduro at Mount Panorama after overcoming Supercars stars Thomas Randle and Will Davison, who did suffer a gearbox gremlin.

However, it was far from smooth sailing for Ojeda/Hodges/Miedecki on race eve.

Despite qualifying fourth, the team encountered mechanical dramas on Saturday which meant the the #1 BMW would be able to line up on the grid for its title defence.

However, unlikely assistance came from Beric Lynton, who would turn out to be one of the biggest threats on race day.

Lynton provided the defending winners with a new differential on Saturday night, which ensured they could go racing.

Ironically a gearbox issue hurt Lynton as Davison lost the lead inside the final half an hour to Ojeda.

After the win, Ojeda was quick to recognise the part his rival played in the victory.

“I have to say a massive thank you to Beric and the team at Bruce Lynton Service,” Ojeda told Bathurst 6 Hour.

“We threw a diff out yesterday (on Saturday) and they stepped in and provided us with one, so without them we wouldn’t be here.

“It was great sportsmanship on their behalf, and it ultimately gave us a great car.

“I don’t think we had the quickest car like we did last year when it came to race pace, but we just played the race really well.

“It was unfortunate for Beric, Tim, and Will that they had the problems they had.”
