Van Gisbergen suffers mechanical DNF in Vegas

By Thomas Miles

Shane van Gisbergen has suffered his first DNF of his NASCAR Xfinity Series career due to overheating issues at Las Vegas.

Van Gisbergen’s #97 Kaulig Racing Camaro only made it through 25 of the 200 laps in the third race of the year before heading to the garage and retiring.

It DNF ends an a challenging weekend for the Kiwi, who after finishing third at Atlanta, couldn’t quite unlock the same speed at Las Vegas, qualifying 25th.

He fell two spots in the opening lap and settled into 28th in the early stages. The Kiwi rose to 24th during the early caution period but by lap 29 he had fallen back to 29th.

After van Gisbergen reported “oil temperatures were rising” on the radio, Kaulig Racing called the Camaro to pit road and pushed it into the garage.

It is a tough blow for van Gisbergem, who was looking forward to getting plenty of laps at his first mile and a half track which dominate the calendar.

John Hunter Nemecheck charged from 12th to secure a dominant 4.3s win over Cole Custer.

The next challenge for van Gisbergen will be Phoenix Raceway which starts at 08.30 AEDT Sunday, March 10.
