Aero Changes Revealed for the Camaro
It’s not only the Mustang that’s undergoing modifications for the 2024 season; recent aero testing has led to adjustments in the 6th Generation Camaro as well. While the changes to the Chevrolet are comparatively minor, the aerodynamic changes made to the Mustang remain unseen by Auto Action.
Manufacturing of the new components has already begun, and teams were informed of these alterations in the past couple of days.
The adjustments were implemented to maintain similarity between the cars following modifications to the Mustang, which are aimed at providing an expanded setup window with less front ride height (FRH) sensitivity. For the Ford, this was achieved through changes to the splitter’s leading-edge radius, mirroring the Camaro’s profile, and a raised middle section to facilitate airflow underneath during low ride heights.
This means the sharper leading edge on the front splitter of the 2023 Mustang will be replaced with a more rounded profile like the 2023 Camaro. According to our sources, this contributed to some of the significant balance changes observed in the Mustang under braking and acceleration. These modifications have increased front downforce in both cars, necessitating Supercars to permit more rear downforce to maintain the right balance. The specific Camaro changes include:
- Moving the rear wing pillar 50mm rearward, with the final design yet to be finalised.
- Widening the rear wing by 100mm using two 50mm spacers on either side, a cost-effective approach like the post-Bathurst modifications to the Mustang.
- Running the two rear window braces in the tunnel.
- Changing the profile of the four front splitter inner centre skids to raise the centre.
- Adding a small splitter leading edge packer to enhance the outer leading edge radius, likely to be 3D printed and bonded onto existing splitters temporarily, with new units manufactured with this profile in the long term.
The final CAD (Computer-Aided Design) will be provided to the teams shortly. Confirmation of changes to the Mustang is expected soon after final wind tunnel testing.
