Australian Grand Prix record breaker pushing F1 to new heights

Australian Grand Prix

By Thomas Miles

The record-breaking Australian Grand Prix is the second largest crowd in what is likely to be the most attended Formula 1 season ever.

So far attendance figures from 19 of the 22 races have been made public and the claimed total number of fans to stream through the gates is just under 5.7 million.

Once the figures for the Azerbaijan, Monaco and Abu Dhabi races are revealed, the final figure could break 6 million for the first time.

It is the continual sign for the sport’s incredible growth following the success of 2022 which attracted 5.7 million fans, the current record. But that is expected to be easily surpassed once all races are tallied.

Last year the American Grand Prix was the most attended with 440,000 coming to Circuit of the Americas, while the first Australian Grand Prix in three years was next best with 419,114.

After even more flocked to Albert Park in 2023, the popular race in Melbourne remains among the biggest in the world.

A new record attendance of 444,631 came to watch Oscar Piastri score his first points at home.

Throughout the entire 23-race season, only the British Grand Prix at Silverstone can boast a bigger crowd.

A massive 480,000 fans saw Lando Norris and Max Verstappen fight for victory at Silverstone making it the biggest in 2023.

Great Britain, Australia, United States and Mexico City are the four races to exceed the 400,000 weekend attendance figure, while Belgium, Canada, Las Vegas, Netherlands, Italy, Austria and Hungary all attracted more than 300,000.

All races aside from Italy, Singapore and the United States had a year on year increase from 2022.

Despite Max Verstappen’s dominance, it is a clear sign Formula 1 is more popular than ever and another massive Australian Grand Prix is on the cards in 2024 with race day tickets selling out within hours.
