Tragedy struck Sydney Motorsport Park over the weekend after a fatality occurred during a NSW Motor Race Championship event.

Darren Barlow passed away at just 53 after a single-car crash in the third SuperSports race of the weekend.

Barlow led eight of the nine laps of the third race, but suffered a fatal crash at the opening corner of Eastern Creek.

Motorsport Australia confirmed the sad news.

“Motorsport Australia has been notified of a fatal incident at Sydney Motorsport Park that occurred in the evening session of a state championship event on Saturday 26 July 2025,” a Motorsport Australia statement said.

“A 53-year-old man was treated by NSW Ambulance paramedics, however died at the scene.

“We extend our condolences to the family and friends of the competitor, and to the officials and first responders at the scene.

“Motorsport Australia’s Critical Incident Plan is in action, and staff are working with NSW Police and the venue following this incident.”

GWR Australia posted an emotional tribute.

“We are devastated by the tragic loss of Darren,” the social media post read.

“Darren was one of our drivers for many years and a much-loved part of both our team and the state racing paddock.

“His passion for NSW SuperSports, and his tireless efforts to grow the category and boost participation were a true testament to his dedication and love for the sport.

“He was more than a teammate, Darren was a friend to so many within the motorsport community.

“His energy, commitment, and generous spirit will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

“Our heartfelt love, strength, and support go out to Bec, his family, and everyone feeling the weight of this loss during such a difficult time.”

Long-time driver Ric Shaw said some emotional words on Nine News.

“At the end of that race I stood up and said to my wife, I’m going to go and see Darren, see how he went, see how he’s going,” said Shaw.

“Unfortunately I couldn’t see him, I couldn’t speak to him again.

“He’s one of those in the background that keeps the wheels turning at all levels.

“Motorsport is dangerous, we all know that as drivers. Every time we put a helmet on we know what we’re doing. We all take the risk because we love it. Darren, thanks mate. I’m really going to miss you.”
