VAILO Adelaide 500 Supercars car by car event guide

By Thomas Miles

After 26 races, 4860km and 11 events, the titanic fight between Erebus Motorsport and Triple Eight Race Engineering for Supercars supremacy will be decided at the massive VAILO Adelaide 500.

It is a straight street fight between rising talent Brodie Kostecki gunning for his and his team’s maiden crown and Shane van Gisbergen, who wants to salute Supercars with a fourth title.

If van Gisbergen is to defend his championship, he has some work to do with Erebus and Kostecki holding the high ground.

The #99 Coke Camaro carries a solid 131-point advantage into the finale over the #97 Kiwi, while Erebus is 170 in front of Triple Eight in the teams title.

It means that a seventh Kostecki win of the season on Saturday would seal a sensational title win.

If the #99 achieves second or third, SVG must be no lower than third and fifth respectively.

If Kostecki and Erebus can get the job done, they would have pulled off one of the great underdog stories of Supercars in similar style to the sudden rise of the team Erebus took over, Stone Brothers Racing exactly 20 years ago.

Although the world-famous VAILO Adelaide 500 made a long-awaited and celebrated comeback from two years away in 2022, it missed the title showdown.

With Kostecki and van Gisbergen in the middle of the first championship fight to go down to the final round in five years, Adelaide

will provide the perfect backdrop to what shapes up to be a thrilling finale to the first season of Gen3.

The last time these streets decided a champion of its main event (Formula 1/Supercars) was the infamous 1994 Australian Grand Prix when just one point separated Michael Schumacher and Damon Hill and we all know what happened at Turn 6.

On this occasion Erebus is in Benetton’s shoes as a rising force desperate to get a maiden title, while Triple Eight is Williams, the recent dominant giant eager to continue its dynasty.

No matter what happens between the title protagonists, Adelaide always produces memorable moments.

After being resurfaced, the comeback last year was full of drama on the slippery track with many drivers being caught out and making mistakes.

At the end of two eventful 78-lap classics, Chaz Mostert led home an emotional WAU one-two and Broc Feeney held back the tears as he pulled off a Jamie Whincup like drive to get his first win in Holden’s final race.

Thrown in the threat of a first wet Adelaide 500 race since 2016 on Saturday and there are all the ingredients of a special weekend.

For one last time in 2023, start your engines and enjoy the ride!
