Wood goes back to back as title race tightens

The chase for the Porsche Carrera Cup Australia title will go down to the death after Dale Wood led home Callum Hedge in a one-lap dash in race two.

After the title rivals went side by side off the line, Hedge’s runner-up finish and Walls’ P4 ensured just 2 points split the pair ahead of Sunday’s finale with the McElrea Racing driver in front.

Wood once again dominated the race which was interrupted by a safety car but set up a one-lap chase to the chequered flag.

But for the second straight race he held his nerve to lead home Hedge.

Wood had a flying start leaving the championship leaders to fight for second best which is what they did.

Walls had the faster start and tried to line up a move down the inside of Hedge, but the Kiwi was not having any of it, closing the gap immediately.

This forced Walls to take to the grass which left him vulnerable to Alex Davison at the chicane, but he managed to stay strong and hold onto third.

Further back Marco Flack spun Tim Miles who was at the end of a train of cars making nose to tail contact at turn 1.

Walls then had a scary moment at turn 8, sliding through the high speed right hander and the mistake proved costly as he lost third to Vidau at the following hairpin.

Marc Cini had a spin at the final corner after colliding with Christian Pancione, who was at the back after bowling a wide at turn 4 at the start.

As the race neared midway, Wood was in charge by a solid 1.5s but this was wiped out by the arrival of the safety car.

The stoppage was caused by Matt Belford, who had a heavy hit with the turn 8 wall.

He clipped the inside kerb which fired him straight into the concrete which dragged the left rear wheel off and sent him spinning towards the inside wall.

This setup a grandstand finish as the field made a one-lap dash of the chequered flag with Wood leading Hedge, Vidau and Walls.

Wood nailed the restart and immediately gapped Hedge to make sure his grip on the win was safe.

There were no position changes up front as the field completed the final lap.

It means the thrilling fight for the 2023 Porsche Carrera Cup Australia title will be decided at 13.15 AEDT on Sunday.

With just 2 points between Walls and Hedge, it will be a battle not to be missed.
