Elite field set for Carrera Cup Bathurst round

The 30 car Porsche Carrera Cup Australia field to take on Mount Panorama at next weeks Bathurst 1000 is stacked full champions on both a national and international scale.

The recent announcement of British driver Harry King joining the field has boosted the international flavour, as well as adding to the number of international championships owned by some of the 30 car grid.

All up there are six Porsche Carrera Cup champions with nine different titles spanning four different series’, including four past CC Australia champions, which is a first in the 20 year history.

One of those local title holders is 2022 champion Harry Jones, who this year came within a few corners of taking the F1 exclusive Mobil 1 Supercup Rookie title at Monza.

Jones is also a teammate of the visiting King (2020 Carrera Cup GB title and the 2022 Benelux- Belgium, Netherlands – title) with Lechner Racing in the pinnacle one-make Supercup series.

Other former national winners are 2004 champion Alex Davison, Fabian Coulthard (2005), and David Wall (2017).

The returning Aussie in Jones will race for his own team for the first time, Jones Motorsport, whilst  Davison will return for Scott Taylor Motorsport, Coulthard for the familiar BWT Porsche Centre Melbourne entry, and Wall in his own Monochrome-backed entry for Wall Racing.

Kiwi Van der Drift – a three time CC Asia champion, and this year’s Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia co-champion – will deputise for this year’s Michelin Junior winner, Kiwi Callum Hedge, in the NZ/Earl Bamber Motorsport entry.

All up, the 2023 Bathurst field has a whopping 180 Carrera Cup victories between them, with 85 of those shared between the four national champs.

Hedge’s absence means that Jackson Walls and Dale wood can close the gap on the leader, who has a 116 point buffer over Walls. 

But a sweep from Walls would mean that he’d take the series lead after falling just short of the Junior title that was decided at the Sandown 500.

In the Pro Am fight, current leader Sam Shahin is in a race against time to prepare for Bathurst after his crash at Sandown, with Dean Cook 33 points back, who is closely tagged by Adrian Flack, a further four points back. Rodney Jane is also only 17 back on that leading trio.

Jackson Walls will be looking to bounce back from the disappointment of Sandown to shake the championship tree.

The Porsche Carrera Cup Australia field first hits the track on Thursday for practice 1 at 8:55am, the 50-minute session the sole hit out before qualifying later that afternoon at 3:45pm.

Race 1 will commence at 2:20pm on Friday afternoon over 15 laps, doubling as the Enduro Cup race for the weekend.

Race 2 starts at 3:15pm on Saturday with the final 9-lap sprint the curtain raiser to this year’s Bathurst 1000 at 9:30am on Sunday.

All sessions will be broadcast live on Fox Sports and Kayo Sport, while all three races will also be broadcast live and free on the Seven Network around Australia.
