O’Keeffe continues Carrera Cup dominance

O'Keeffe

By Thomas Miles

There was no stopping Dylan O’Keeffe, who maintained his grip on P1 by taking Porsche Carrera Cup pole position at Sandown.

After an intense 20-minute session, O’Keeffe kept his nerve to post a 1:08.6980, which was a tenth clear of his rivals.

It contines his one lap dominace at Sandown having also finished first in both practice sessions.

Callum Hedge snared second having edged out Max Vidau, David Russell and Bayley Hall as less than a tenth split positions two to five.

Hedge made a major leap to the Michelin Junior Cup title with his nearest rival Jackson Walls struggling in 13th.

It was game on from the start of the session with less than a tenth separating Vidau and Russell.

However, the pace continued to climb with O’Keeffe posting a 1:09.2027 which was a tenth better than Vidau, Russell and Hedge.

He continued to go faster until Vidau knocked him off by a tenth with a 1:08.8118.

Vidau’s time in front proved to short as O’Keeffe responded and lowered the benchmark to a 1:08.6980 on his sixth lap, which proved to be enough for pole.

Hedge split the pair to get second and increase his advantage over Walls who was 13th despite the #17 running wide at Dandenong Road.

But it did not matter with Walls down in 13th and struggling to unlock his pace.

There was nothing in it in the earlier Am drivers session with just two hundredths of a second the difference at the top and two tenths spreading the top five. Staying at the top the whole way was Sam Shahin, who posted a 1:10.1162.

It was just 0.0288s faster than Dean Cook, while Adrian Flack and Rodney Jane were not far behind on the second row with King’s sub Liam Talbot in fifth.

The first Carrera Cup race is at 10.05 AEST Saturday morning.
