Motorsport Australia releases banned tarmac rally vehicle list

By Timothy Neal

Motorsport Australia has released its 2023 Tarmac Rally Technical Regulations, which includes a list of ineligible vehicles.

The first event to utilise the regulations will be the Adelaide Rally on November 16-19, with that also being the only tarmac event that Motorsport Australia is currently sanctioning.

Currently, all other tarmac events that are confirmed to run in Australia are sanctioned by the AASA who have their own set of regulations.

The regulations list includes vehicle eligibility, and key technical details which include apparel, automotive safety (safety cage/seats and mounts/fire extinguishers/rally door foam, etc), ABS options, Wheels and Tyres, and Speed limitation device options.

The list of ineligible vehicles is centred around its power to weight ratio and acceleration capabilities. The regulation reads:

“An automobile of a make and model identified on a list of vehicles published by Motorsport Australia as ineligible for Tarmac Rally or with a power to weight ratio of less than 4.2kg/hp (5.6kg/kW) and which is capable in competition of a 0-100km/h acceleration time of less than 3.6 seconds is not permitted”

The list of ineligible vehicles includes:

“This is an important milestone in the return of Targa style tarmac rally events in Australia,” Motorsport Australia CEO Eugene Arocca said.

“We worked closely with Tim Possingham and the entire team at the Adelaide Rally to permit this event.

“A big thank you must also go to the Australian Rally Commission members who have spent much time preparing these regulations alongside our Motorsport Australia staff who are committed to seeing these events return.”
