Porsche Carrera Cup resumes with Top End trip

By Timothy Neal

The Porsche Carrera Cup Australia season will get on a roll for Round 2 at Darwin this weekend after 10 weeks on the sidelines.

The Top End resumption at Hidden Valley Raceway is a welcome return for the premier one-make category following early April’s AGP Albert Park hit-out.

The 28 car 911 GT3 Cup field heads to Darwin with Jackson Walls and Max Vidau sharing the early outright lead.

Walls is fresh from scoring two Pro Am podiums in the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia round at the Bend, and will be eager to add to his maiden series victory from the Grand Prix in the #11 McElrea Racing 911.

With Fabian Coulthard recently announced return to the Carrera Cup, there will be three former champions taking on Darwin, including David Wall and Alex Davison – who is the only driver to have recorded multiple round wins in Darwin (2004/2016).

Marc Cini returns from racing at the centennial 24 Hours of Le Mans weekend, whilst it’s a big round for Callum Hedge, with the third placed and highly talented Kiwi every chance to put a win on the board after his pole at the AGP.

In the Pro Am class, Adrian Flack heads to Hidden Valley as the frontrunner, with Rodney Jane another racer that’s returning from a trip to Le Mans in second over Dean Cook.

Dale Wood will also mark up his 100th Carrera Cup Australia race this weekend in Race, becoming the 26th driver to make it to the one-make ton, and will be hoping to add to his four pole positions at the Top End track.

The Melbourne Performance Centre squad will also be making a comeback to the championship this weekend after more than a decade out of the championship, with the GT WCA winning outfit fielding three drivers in Cini, Nick McBride, and Matt Belford.

Qualifying will be held in two parts – for Pro and Pro Am runners – on Saturday morning before Race 1 on Saturday afternoon.

Races 2 & 3 will be held on Sunday, with the first and third races of the weekend to be shown live on the Seven Network around Australia.

All three days of racing will be broadcast, with action commencing on Friday with a pair of two practice sessions.
