Williams to make GT WCE Sprint Cup debut

By Timothy Neal

Calan Williams will suit up at Brands Hatch for Team WRT in the GT World Challenge Sprint Cup opener in England this weekend, May 13-14.

Fresh off an Endurance Cup podium in his GT racing debut in the WRT #30 BMW M4 GT3 at Monza, Williams is also doubling up with the Sprint Cup in 2023 for the famous Belgian team.

The Gold Cup class Aussie played a pivotal role in helping his young teammates Jean-Baptiste Simmenauer and Niklas Krutten take P3, with the German youngster in Krutten also backing up with Williams for the Sprint Cup.

“It was a great start to the season and thanks to team WRT, I can’t wait for the next one”, Williams said at Monza.

“Obviously, finishing on the podium is nice but I think we had the potential for more. From my side, I still have a bit of work to do, in terms of race pace management, and that will be my priority going into the next races.”

The former F2 racer will also get to share the garage with a motorsport superstar this weekend, with WRT racer Valentino Rossi making his first GT WCE Sprint Cup appearance, with the former MotoGP legend racing in the Pro class.

Another Aussie will also be making their GT WCE Sprint Cup debut this weekend, with Mercedes AMG Junior Factory driver Jordan Love competing in the Silver Class.

Love has generally been an endurance specialist so far in his GT career, racing regularly at the Nurburgring Endurance Series with Haupt Racing, alongside team owner Hubert Haupt.

Racing alongside British youngster Frank Bird, love is looking forward to the challenge of trying a different and shorter format.

“This is my first time competing in the Sprint Cup, which is an unfamiliar format for me as I’ve only ever raced in the Endurance Cup,” Love said.

“But I’m looking forward to the shorter race format. With Frank (Bird) I have a good partner and in combination with HRT we are well set up for the Silver Cup.

“Frank and I already successfully competed in a few races last year. My personal goal is to compete for podium positions in our class and take home a trophy as often as possible.”

The action from qualifying and both races can be watched free online, live or in replay, via the GT WCE YouTube channel.
