Fan favourite Leyton House returning to Adelaide

By Thomas Miles

The bright and popular Leyton House CG891 Judd Formula 1 car is coming back to thrill fans at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival.

Leyton House’s 1989 challenger has been a regular fixture at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival over the years and returns for the 2023 edition as the latest F1 addition.

The Adrian Newey designed CG891 raced in the 1989 Formula 1 with Ivan Capelli and Mauricio Gugelmin at the wheel.

It was seen in the heart of the “Adelaide Alive” era of the Australian Grand Prix and Gugelmin was one of just eight out of 26 finishers of the 1989 race, which was hammered by a huge deluge of rain.

Over the course of the season Gugelmin produced a number of highlights, with Adelaide being one of three occasions he finished just outside of the points.

But the biggest high arrived in Brazil when he pushed the unfancied Leyton House to a stunning podium at his home race – his only trophy from 90 Grand Prix starts.

A lowlight was France where Gugelin ended up upside down after a multi-car smash up in the opening corner at Paul Ricard.

Gugelmin’s 1989 teammate Capelli has previously driven the CG891 on the streets of Adelaide himself at a number of Adelaide Motorsport Festivals over the years.

The CG891 will not be the only car carrying the famous bright blue Leyton House colours at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival, joining the Kremer Racing Porsche 962C Group C sportscar and Formula 3000 car.

They will all be on show at the Adelaide Motorsport Festival on March 24-26.
