Another Porsche Ace jumps into Super2

By Timothy Neal

Another Carrera Cup Porsche ace has made the leap into Super2, with 2021 Michelin Junior Driver champion Cooper Murray inking a deal with Eggleston Motorsport.

The youngest race and round winner in Carrera Cup Australia history will pilot a Triple Eight built ZB Commodore in the 2023 series.

He joins the recent WAU signing’s of Ryan Wood, and Aaron Love to the Blanchard Racing team as drivers to make the jump from Porsche’s into Supercars machinery.

Murray’s no stranger to the ZB Commodore, having conducted a test for Team 18 at Winton in the lead up to the Tasmanian SuperSprint, and he can’t wait to take his first step on the road to his Supercars dream.

“I’m honoured to be joining Eggleston Motorsport next year in the Super 2 championship” Murray said.

“It’s going to be an exciting year in Super 2 with the ZB’s and Mustangs being introduced to the category.

I want to be in Supercars, and this is the next step of achieving that. Ben (Eggleston) and Rachael (Eggleston) have helped many young drivers like Brodie Kostecki and Will Brown achieve that. I’m looking forward to working with the experienced team and putting in the work to get acquainted with the cars and team to make sure we start our 2023 campaign strong at Newcastle for round one.”

The Porsche young gun joined the Carrera Cup in 2019, where he joined McElrea mid season and remarkably swept the Townsville round to cement his place in Australian Porsche history as its youngest race and round winner.

He started the next season in dominant fashion with another sweep before the Pandemic ended the season early, and in 2021, he had had a great battle with Cameron Hill where he finished second in the championship, but took out the Michelin Jnr title over this year’s champion Harri Jones.

In the same year, he represented Australia in the global Junior Porsche shootout, and made his European race debut in the French Carrera Cup where he scored a podium and finished third outright for the round.

Eggleston Motorsport co-owner and Team Manager Rachael Eggleston is excited to bring yet another young gun through the Eggleston system.

“Cooper is a proven race winner, his determination and speed is obvious and we have no doubt he is going to grab this opportunity with both hands to make sure he is on the pace early in the season,” Eggleston said.

We have a history of bringing young talent into the sport and being a big part of their journey to get them to their ultimate goal of being a main series driver.  We love nothing more than meeting drivers who share the same passion and drive that we do.

Cooper was a stand out in a Porsche in recent years, and we are confident his ability will translate well to a Supercar and together with our experience we are quite sure he will make an impact early in the season.”

The highly anticipated 2023 Super2 Series will kick off at the Newcastle street circuit on March 10-12 2023, and with the shuffle down of the Gen2 Supercars and the transition of some truly talented young drivers, it’s sure to be a hotly contested year.
