GruppeM Racing return to the Mountain

By Timothy Neal

Another team of international contenders have entered the 2023 Bathurst 12 Hour ring, with GruppeM Racing set to hit the Mountain on February 3-5.

A highly consistent international act, GruppeM are one of the highest performing teams of the GT3 era, and its entry into Australia’s biggest summer enduro adds to the growing flavour of quality teams heading over for the Intercontinental GT World Challenge opener.

The Hong Kong-flagged German based team will head over for its third Bathurst 12 Hour with in a Mercedes AMG GT3, but are yet to clarify its pilots.

They first came in 2019, with a team made up of Maximilian Buhk, Maximilian Götz and Raffaele Marciello for a third place finish after starting on pole.

Again in 2020, they returned with Marciello, Buhk and Felipe Fraga and ran in contention until a late puncture forced them into the pits, only for them to then cross the line in P2, before a 30 second penalty relegated them into P6 after failing to shut off the cars engine in a frantic visit to the pits.

Recently, they locked out the front row of the Gulf 12 Hour, before issues forced both cars out, as Ferrari came home with a one-two.

Bathurst 12 Hour Event Director, Shane Rudzis, is elated to have the win-at-all-costs team back at Mount Panorama.

“GruppeM were one of the first international teams to lodge an entry this year, it’s exciting to have them back,” said Rudzis.

“In 2019 and 2020 they proved that they are one of the most competitive teams to tackle the Mountain and you’re never in doubt that they will be giving everything to win.

“They’ve crossed the line inside the top three on the road on both occasions they have competed which is an incredible strike rate. Watching them aim for a Bathurst victory and taking on great teams from here and abroad will be a big story of the race this year.”
