Mercedes on top of the GT world

By Timothy Neal

2022 will be remembered as another year of the Mercedes-AMG in the GT World Challenge, as it claims its fourth consecutive manufacturers crown.

Known as the Intercontinental GT Challenge Powered by Pirelli manufacturers’ title, the crown is contested across seven teams and four continents, with Mercedes taking it out with one round to spare.

All up the GT World Challenge was contested over 51 races, which was a record running for the series that was established in 2019, with the seven manufacturers also creating a new participation landmark.

The GT WC officially wrapped up (series wise) with the Australia series at the Adelaide 500, but the German brand had already sewn up its world title across the accumulated points over four GT continents with only the Gulf 12 Hours to come (December 9-11).

Points are accumulated by GT3 entries across Europe, Asia, America, and Australia, with seven of the world’s top automotive brands present, with Mercedes-AMG managing to top the standings in America.

Although Mercedes was knocked off its perch in its heartland of Europe by fellow German manufacturer Audi Sport, Porsche led the way in Asia over Ferrari, whilst Australia also went to Audi with Yasser Shahin’s triumph over Prince Jefri Ibrahim in third outright.

Despite topping the table in two continents, Audi’s absence in America, and the Mercedes consistency led it to taking the prestigious crown, with Ferrari in third spot followed by Porsche, Lamborghini, McLaren and BMW.

Of the Mercedes-AMG customer squads, Akkodis ASP where the best performed with four titles in Europe, which included Mercedes taking out its first 24 Hours of Spa since 2013.
