Golding gives PremiAir provisional pole

Golding darwin 2024

By Thomas Miles

PremiAir Nulon Racing is pumped after James Golding soared to provisional pole in Friday qualifying at the Darwin Triple Crown.

Golding led the majority of the 15-minute session and a late 1:05.6912 saw the #31 sneak ahead of Nick Percat and Mark Winterbottom.

Percat was just 0.07s away but only Golding will have the licence to chase the Darwin Triple Crown with drivers required to top Friday qualifying in addition to winning both races at Hidden Valley.

Completing the top five were the Triple Eight teammates, while Anton De Pasquale and Cameron Waters will be the only Fords to appear in the Top 10 Shootout.

David Reynolds, Tim Slade and Andre Heimgartner will also appear in the one-lap dash, while Erebus teammates Brodie Kostecki and Jack Le Brocq just missed out.

After dominating Perth, Walkinshaw Andretti United was nowhere with Chaz Mostert and Ryan Wood starting 22nd and 24th respectively.

Golding’s pace was evident from the get-go as he and Percat flew out of the blocks and were the only ones in the 1m5s window after the early flyers.

Golding emerged in top with a 1:05.8655, which was just 0.0714s clear of Percat.

They were two tenths clear of the Erebus Camaros of Kostecki and Le Brocq, while Matt Payne was the only Ford in the top six.

The likes of Brown, Feeney, Waters, Randle, De Pasquale and Winterbottom did not post a lap in anger until the six minute mark.

In a rare oddity, Kostecki was the first to be caught out by the live pit lane order and missed the Erebus bay.

Both Waters and Feeney went straight into the top five, while Slade carried on PremiAir’s pace by rising to third and being within a tenth of his teammate.

As the session entered the final five minutes, Waters was the only Ford in the top 10 and his teammate Randle, plus Payne and De Pasquale sat just outside the cut.

Everyone went for it at the death and both Brown and Golding were on the money setting purple sectors.

Brown rose from eighth out of trouble to second, but Winterbottom turned heads by shooting all the way to the top from 16th.

But he was knocked off by Percat and then Golding again who hit back to reclaim P1.

Reynolds rose to sixth but he was one of the few to improve, with only De Pasquale doing the same, sneaking into the 10 from down in 15th after the chequered flag.

Mostert was all the way down in 23rd and could only make up one spot on his final lap.

Teams will enjoy practice at 9.25 ACST before the Top 10 Shootout at 11.35 on Saturday morning.
