Murray reflects on first day as a Supercars driver

Cooper Murray darwin 2024 friday

By Thomas Miles

Cooper Murray has completed his first day as a Supercars driver in the #888 wildcard and believes he could have been “further up the grid.”

Murray is the latest to step into the Supercheap Auto Triple Eight Camaro and the Darwin Triple Crown is his first weekend in the main game.

With the single test day at Queensland Raceway under his belt, the Super2 youngster finished his first Supercars session in 24th, just seven tenths away having battled radio and brake dramas.

Murray found those seven tenths in qualifying and the 1:06.4834 was enough to be 23rd on the grid ahead of Ryan Wood and Aaron Love, who have four rounds under their belt.

However, Murray lamented a mistake on his hot lap and believes he could be starting higher.

“The first session was really good to get out there and familiarise myself with everything,” Murray said.

“The session didn’t run as smooth as we would have liked because we had some brake and radio dramas that were unexpected and hindered our plans a little bit, but it was great to get that session over and done with before qualifying.

“It was quite a big hit out that qualifying session – I think only having one practice session under my belt was a bit difficult for me being the first time here in Darwin in these cars, but we managed to come away with an ok position.

“It wasn’t where we’d like to be because I made a mistake on my lap which cost us a fair few grid positions so at least we know we can be further up the grid.

“I’m loving the experience so far, every second of it.”
