TOYOTA TURNS TO THE FUTURE

By Auto Action

Toyota has unveiled its future by taking the wraps off its new GR86 racecar that will make its on track debut in the 2024 Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia 86 Series.

The new car is based on the GR86 and has been developed by Neal Bates Motorsport, and is now available for competitors to order with a turnkey package priced at $89,990.

The new model was released to current the competitors who just completed the 2022 TGRA 86 Series at the end of season dinner at Bathurst, where Lachlan Gibbons secured the championship crown by 43 points ahead of runner-up Zach Bates.

The TGRS 86 Series arrived on the Australian motorsport scene in 2016, and immediately became a fan favourite.

The one-make development series has launched the careers of Will Brown, Broc Feeney, Cameron Hill and Jaylen Robotham to name a few.

The new Toyota 86 racecar will make its on-track debut in 2024.

Toyota’s new GR86 racer marks the brand’s long-term commitment to the category, which will continue until at least the end of 2026.

The car itself will be fully built by Neal Bates Motorsport, featuring a full roll cage, race seat and six-point harness, motorsport spec steering wheel, ECU and instruments, control wheels and tyres, and upgraded suspension, brakes, exhaust, oil cooler and clutch.

Maximum engine power and torque will be approximately 10% greater than the standard GR86 road car’s outputs of 174kW/250Nm and the racecar is approximately 70kg lighter than the road equivalent.

Other performance specifications will be confirmed once final testing and validation is completed later this year.

A total of 32 entries participated in the 2022 TGRA 86 Series season finale at Bathurst last weekend, while approximately 35 racecars will be available for competitors to order for the 2024 season.

The next chapter of the Toyota Gazoo Racing Australia 86 Series was unveiled following the final round of the 2022 championship at Bathurst last weekend.

Toyota Australia chief marketing officer Vin Naidoo said it was a thrill to unveil the new GR86 racecar, which represents the future of the TGRA 86 Series.

“For seven years, the TGRA 86 Series has proven to be the perfect development ground for aspiring professional race drivers and those passionate weekend warriors who just love racing,” he said.

“Toyota is committed to supporting all the teams and drivers in the TGRA 86 Series and earlier this year, we announced that we would extend that support through to the end of 2026.

“And I’m very excited to be unveiling the new GR86 racecar that will make its debut in the 2024 season.

“Neal Bates and his team have worked hard to make this an incredibly sharp, affordable racecar that I’m sure will continue to make the TGRA 86 Series one of the most hotly contested on the Australian motorsport calendar.”
