DICK JOHNSON RACING’S BIG WEEK ROUNDED OUT WITH DRIVER SIGNINGS

By Bruce Williams

Dick Johnson Racing has moved swiftly following its ownership announcement on Monday in renewing its commitment to Anton De Pasquale and Will Davison for the 2023 season.

According to the media release, both drivers will continue with the team for 2023, with no indication that either deal runs past the end of the first Gen3 season. De Pasquale was always seen as more likely than not to be driving with the team in 2023, a position reinforced by his relationship with the Ralph family that now has a controlling interest in the team (see DJR  Hits Home Run With New Major Stakeholder).

Davison, on the other hand, was the centre of plenty of speculation, with DJR supposedly exploring its options with Will Brown. However, there is no indication of any serious approach to the young Erebus driver. Brown put paid to the rumours when it was announced at the end of July he was staying with Erebus for 2023, leaving Davison in the box seat to continue with the team.

Davison, who turns 40 in a couple of weeks, is in the middle of a purple patch of form that has seen him score six pole positions, one race win and 10 podiums so far this season. His record-breaking speed in Darwin a few weeks back came at the perfect time to remind his employers that he brings more than just experience to the team.

“I’m very excited to continue driving for the Shell V-Power Racing Team,” Davison said. “It’s a fantastic opportunity to race in the iconic Shell V-Power colours, the legendary #17 and for such an iconic race team in DJR.

“I can’t wait to build on the excellent results we’ve had to date and continue fighting for race wins. I love working with the entire race team, they’re a great group of people and feel like family.”

Davison made his debut in the series at Winton in 2004 and has recently become only the seventh driver in the history of the Australia Touring Car Championship to record 500 starts. He has two Bathurst wins, was runner-up to Jamie Whincup in the 2009 Championship, and has 20 race wins.

De Pasquale is in his fifth season in Supercars and has six wins, all recorded last season in his first with DJR.
