BAGNAIA IN ROAD CAR CRASH

By Dan McCarthy

Factory Ducati Corse rider Francesco Bagnaia could face a driving ban after he crash a road car and was found to be over-three times the legal alcohol limit.

The Italian was out celebrating his recent MotoGP race victory at a club with mates in Ibiza, on the way home driving the car Bagnaia lost control of the Citroen and crashed into a ditch.

Reports coming out of Spain say that when police arrived on the scene he was asked to perform a breathalyser test.

The seven-time MotoGP race winner reportedly gave a reading of 0.87mg/l, well over three times the legal alcohol limit of 0.25mg/l allowed in Spain.

As it was 3am and the roads were quiet Bagnaia’s vehicle was the only one involved in the accident.

Both he and his other passengers fortunately escaped uninjured, however Bagnaia could race a road ban due to the extent at which he was over the legal alcohol limit.

Bagnaia made a statement on social media confirming the crash occurred and stating he has well and truly learnt his lesson.

“Last night I was in Ibiza with my friends at a party during this non-racing break of MotoGP. We were celebrating my victory together in Assen,” he wrote.

“Leaving the club around 3am, at a roundabout I ended up with both front wheels in a ditch without involving other vehicles or people.

“Alcohol check by the Police determined that I drank more than what Spanish law allowed.

“I’m very sorry about what happened: I’m practically a non-drinker and it was a mistake I shouldn’t have made.

“I ask for forgiveness and I assure you, I’ve learned my lesson. Never drive if you’re drunk. Thank you.”

The factory Ducati MotoGP team has not made a statement.
