Two-time Bathurst 12 Hour winner, German Christopher Mies is rumoured to be making a quick trip to Australia to compete at Bathurst next week if granted permission to enter the country.

The 32-year-old Audi driver has competed in the Bathurst 12 Hour and Australian GT Championship, previously winning the national series in 2015 driving an Audi R8.

Since the global COVID-19 pandemic, Mies has been unable to return to Australia, but with New South Wales international border restrictions easing, it is now possible for the German to compete.

The factory Audi driver has been completing paperwork enabling him to enter Australia, where it is hoped that he will drive an Audi R8 alongside Yasser Shahin.

Shahin and his regular co-driver Garth Tander currently lead the GT World Challenge Australia series heading into the final round.

However reigning Bathurst 1000 race winner Tander will be unable to compete as he will be defending his crown alongside Shane van Gisbergen with Triple Eight Race Engineering.

AA also understands that Mies is also a possible starter in a TCR car, racing an RS3 for the Melbourne Performance Centre squad in the TCR Australia Series.

MPC’s own Chaz Mostert leads that series heading into the final round of the season at the Bathurst 1000 and is set to start in the first TCR race of the event to secure the points required to win the 2021 TCR Series.

Mies’ chances of returning to Australia even a fortnight ago were bleak, however a relaxation in New South Wales international arrivals resulted in two overseas drivers competing in the S5000 Tasman Series.

Ex-Formula 1 driver Roberto Merhi and Japanese F3 race winner Yoshiaki Katayama both made it to Sydney Motorsport Park to compete, this news heavily boosts Mies’ chances of racing at The Mountain.
