SUPERCARS PHILLIP ISLAND ROUND CANCELLED

By Dan McCarthy

The scheduled Supercars Championship round at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit has been officially cancelled.

The event was organised by the Australian Grand Prix Cooperation to take the place of the cancelled Australian Motorcycle Grand Prix at the venue.

However due to the COVID-19 outbreak in Victoria, the event from 22-24 October has been canned.

The Bass Coast Festival of Motorsport was set to have the Supercars Championship, Australian Superbikes and Australian Carrera Cup Series take to the iconic race track that weekend.

The Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) CEO, Andrew Westacott was disappointed to have to cancel the event, but explained that it was the only option under the circumstances.

“Due to ongoing challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bass Coast Festival of Motorsport has been cancelled,” Westacott said.

“AGPC would like to thank the Victorian Government, Supercars, Australian Superbike Championship, Porsche Carrera Cup, the Bass Coast Shire Council and associated tourism and business groups for their support during the event creation and planning phases in recent weeks.”

“Our appreciation also extends to Motorsport Australia, Motorcycling Australia and the legion of motorsport fans who provided their support for this new event concept.”

It is the second round of the Supercars Championship to be cancelled in as many days and it is expected that more calendar announcements will be made soon.
