IMSA reveal 2022 schedule

America’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship season is set to be held across 12 rounds again in 2022.

The provisional schedule for next year was revealed as part of the IMSA’s traditional annual ‘State of the Sport’ presentation at Road America while the rule set was also tweaked.

As per tradition, the season will commence with the Rolex 24 at Daytona on January 27-30. While the usual warm-up, the Roar Before the 24 test will take place on the weekend leading up to the 24 hour race, on January 21-23.

Sebring 12 Hours on March 16-19 is the second round before the championship reverts back to a series of shorter endurance races at the Long Beach street circuit, Laguna Seca, Mid-Ohio and Belle Isle.

Watkins Glen will host the sixth round, the Sahlen’s Six Hours of the Glen in late June.

Following COVID-19 related travel bans, Ontario’s Canadian Tire Motorsport Park returns to the schedule in July.

While the remainder of the schedule resembles that of this year, with races at Lime Rock Park, Road America and Virginia International Raceway.

The Petit Le Mans season finale at Road Atlanta rounds out the year, but will be held a week earlier in 2022.

IMSA also used the event to confirm the rule set for next season, with the structure of the GT classes now defined.

GTD PRO is scheduled replace the current GT Le Mans (GTLM) class in 2022, with the both GTD classes set to utilise the same GT3-based technical specifications.

Both classes will be treated the same from a Balance of Performance (BoP) perspective with GTD PRO to allow for factory-supported Pro/Pro driver while GTD will continue its customer racing focus and Pro/Am driver lineups.

WeatherTech SportsCar Championship is in action this weekend at Road America with Australian Matt Campbell in the field.
